Building upon the success of the Saratoga Springs Shootout event last summer which hosted over 80 teams in Saratoga Springs, New York, Rhino Lacrosse and Lake Placid Lacrosse will be teaming up again for a world class event here in Oregon. Teams will compete for a Championship Title like any other Tourney, but this tournament plans to be a lacrosse festival. Players and parents will have the opportunity to experience The Powell Hour demonstration featuring the Powell brothers, as well as pro player clinics, coaching clinics, opening night ceremonies and festivities, a players only lounge, 3v3 mini lax competitions, food trucks, and a vendor village. Leading up to the event there will be a four day Rhino academy in Bend. On Friday the 25th Brian Dougherty will also hold a full day goalie school that includes video analysis with each goalie.
Rhino Lacrosse is an OHSLA sponsor
Young people with undiagnosed heart defects, especially athletes, are susceptible to sudden cardiac arrest. Often there are no advance signs or symptoms and most routine physical exams will not pick up the defects. An electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) is usually necessary to uncover signs of heart irregularities, which is something normally not done in "well-child" checks or even some sports physicals.
In an effort to protect the hearts (and lives) of area middle and high school students, the Providence Heart & Vascular Institute is sponsoring the Play Smart program to provide free painless, non-invasive heart/health checks to youth aged 12-18. For more information check out our Play Smart details page.
With the addition of Girl's brackets, the SALI tournament will be bigger and better than ever before in 2014. This year there will be boys brackets from 1st grade thru High School and girl's brackets for middle school as well high school varsity teams.

Fritz Hayes Frederick "Fritz" Hayes, a lacrosse parent who later became an official, was a tireless champion for the growth of the game in Oregon through his service on the board of the Oregon Lacrosse Officials Association and support of officials training for the Oregon Youth Lacrosse Association.
In Fritz's honor, the OHSLA created the Fritz Hayes Classic (FHC) consisting of games between the previous year's semi-final teams. The second annual FHC will be held at West Linn High School and features West Linn vs Jesuit at 6pm and Lakeridge vs Beaverton at 8pm.While the FHC provides the opportunity to watch great lacrosse, the event is also a fund raiser for the Oregon Youth Officials program. As with last year, all fund raising activities for the FHC will be coordinated by the Oregon Lacrosse Officials Association (OLOA). All proceeds from the event will go to supporting youth lacrosse and the growth of the sport in Oregon. The OLOA will be asking for donation of $5 per adult, $3 for students, while children 5 years and under are free. Please come and watch some great lacrosse and help raise funds for a very good cause.
For the first time in the history of the OHSLA, score keeping clinics are being held in each area of the state (Portland Metro/Salem/Eugene/High Desert). By rules of the game, the score keeping crew is part of the "Officiating Team" during the game, so the training will be conducted by officials from the Oregon Lacrosse Officials Association (OLOA).
This year the OHSLA will provide a new Lacrosse Score Book for each clinic attendee (meaning every program has a chance for a free Score Book), but the only way to secure one is to attend the clinic in your area. We hope score keepers will find the training informative and fun. As always the OHSLA thanks all the parents who volunteer to be score keepers for their teams, without them games would not be possible. For later reference, our master Scorekeeper trainer, Owen Davis, was kind enough to make copies of the training documents available on the site.

Nadzitsaga-Harney Lacrosse and the Burns Paiute Tribe will be hosting the Reservation Day Celebration & Pow Wow and the 6th Annual Amos First Raised III Medicine Games Lacrosse Tournament. The games are played in a more 'traditional' manner (as 'medicine') harking back to the origins of the game of lacrosse. The games are played in conjunction with the Paiute Tribe's Annual Pow Wow and Reservation Day Celebration, thus making for a unique educational, cultural, and history-filled weekend.
Each year the tournament has a specific theme. This year's theme for the lacrosse tournament will be "Play for Ezra". Ezra Parker, the son of former Corvallis Lacrosse Coach Josh Parker was recently diagnosed with Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia (JMML) and is undergoing treatment. The entire lacrosse event will be played on behalf of Ezra and his family. Any and ALL proceeds will be donated to the Parker family. This is an 'open' round robin tournament, 7 v 7 (goalie, 2A, 2M, & 2D), game to 4 (four). Cost is $10/player checks payable to: Ezra Parker c/o Nadzitsaga Lacrosse. If you can't make the tournament but still would like to help Ezra, please visit his CaringBridge Page for details on how you can help.
At the end of the day on Saturday a 'Medicine Game' will be played for Ezra. The basic format is as follows: All players participate, no equipment-sticks only, teams selected randomly, 4" x 4" wooden posts for goals, game to 7 (seven). Wooden sticks/shafts are not only allowed but, encouraged! A Medicine Game was, and still is, played to help heal the sick. The Medicine Game is where the game we know as 'lacrosse' originates.
